Projection is a psychological defense mechanism through which we attribute traits to others we find unacceptable in ourselves. The intensity of our negative reaction to their behavior is a sign of the unconscious distain we feel for ourselves for behaving in similar (or slightly different) ways as those we criticize. Our condemnation of others for differences of opinions or genetics, reveals far more about ourselves than our targets. We know we’re not projecting when instead of seething when we dislike or disagree with others’ behavior, we respond in a firm and balanced way with…

Understanding and compassion.
