The desire to excel at something we care about is normal. Whether in our career, parenting or some other area, it feels good to be skillful. However, if the desire to achieve mastery comes from a feeling of inferiority, it can turn into an imbalanced compulsion to be perfect. When we need to be perfect, what we do is never good enough.
